Dominating the Defending NBA Champions
Defeating the defending NBA champions is always a notable accomplishment, but beating them by 30 or more points is particularly impressive. Doing so multiple times during the same regular season is an unusual achievement in league history.
The NBAHoopsOnline historical archive identifies three teams that accomplished this feat: the 1959-60 Syracuse Nationals, 1998-99 Detroit Pistons and 2017-18 Utah Jazz.
What makes these results especially interesting is that the teams responsible for the blowout victories did not necessarily enjoy greater postseason success than the defending champions they defeated.
Two of the defending champions went on to repeat as NBA champions, while the third experienced a dramatic collapse following the breakup of its championship roster.

Historical Breakdown
2017-18 Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors: The Utah Jazz produced multiple dominant victories over the defending champion Golden State Warriors during the 2017-18 regular season. Utah was led by rookie Donovan Mitchell and Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, with the team developing into one of the Western Conference's strongest defensive clubs.
Despite Utah's success against Golden State, the Warriors went on to win their second consecutive NBA championship, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in a four-game sweep in the 2018 NBA Finals. The Jazz advanced past the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round before losing to the Houston Rockets in five games in the Western Conference Semifinals.
1998-99 Detroit Pistons vs. Chicago Bulls: The Detroit Pistons recorded multiple 30-point victories over the defending champion Chicago Bulls during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season. However, the Bulls were dramatically different from the team that had won six NBA championships during the 1990s.
Michael Jordan had retired for the second time, Scottie Pippen had departed, Dennis Rodman was no longer with the team and head coach Phil Jackson had left Chicago. The rebuilding Bulls finished with a 13-37 record, the worst in the NBA, after winning the 1998 championship.
Detroit finished 29-21 and reached the Eastern Conference playoffs, but the Pistons were eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks in five games in the opening round. Grant Hill remained the centerpiece of Detroit's roster during this period.
1959-60 Syracuse Nationals vs. Boston Celtics: The Syracuse Nationals accomplished the feat against the defending champion Boston Celtics during the 1959-60 season. Syracuse was led by Hall of Fame forward Dolph Schayes, while Boston featured Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and several other key members of its emerging dynasty.
Although Syracuse managed multiple decisive regular-season victories against Boston, the Celtics ultimately won the NBA championship, defeating the St. Louis Hawks in seven games in the 1960 NBA Finals. The title was Boston's second consecutive championship and the second in a remarkable streak of eight straight NBA titles from 1959 through 1966.
The Nationals finished their postseason in the Eastern Division Semifinals, losing to the Philadelphia Warriors. The Syracuse franchise later relocated to Philadelphia in 1963 and became the Philadelphia 76ers.

Why These Records Are Unusual
NBA champions are generally among the strongest teams in the league, and they often retain enough of their championship roster to remain competitive the following season. Consequently, losing multiple games by 30 or more points to the same opponent is unusual.
These three examples also show how different the circumstances can be. The 1959-60 Celtics and 2017-18 Warriors were still championship-caliber teams despite their decisive regular-season losses. The 1998-99 Bulls, however, had undergone a complete roster transformation following the end of their dynasty.
Regular-season matchups can reveal favorable tactical matchups, differences in roster availability or changes in team performance, but they do not always predict postseason results. The Jazz and Nationals both enjoyed remarkable victories against teams that eventually repeated as champions.
For basketball historians, these results offer an unusual perspective on the relationship between regular-season dominance and postseason success.
