NBA Players Who Won Championships With Three Different Teams

A complete historical list of players who have won NBA championships with three different franchises, including their championship teams, seasons and total titles.

Winning NBA Championships With Three Different Franchises

Winning an NBA championship is one of basketball's greatest accomplishments. Winning titles with multiple franchises is even more unusual, especially when a player helps three different organizations reach the top of the league.

Throughout NBA history, only four players have won championships with three different franchises: Robert Horry, John Salley, LeBron James and Danny Green.

These four players reached the milestone in different ways. Horry became known for his clutch postseason shooting and accumulated seven championships. Salley won four titles while contributing to three separate championship organizations. LeBron James became the first player to win NBA Finals MVP awards with three different franchises, while Danny Green captured championships in three consecutive championship stops across San Antonio, Toronto and Los Angeles.

The table below includes each player's championship teams, the number of titles won with each franchise and the championship years.

The Four Players Who Accomplished the Feat

Robert Horry — 7 NBA Championships

Robert Horry won more championships than any other player on this list, collecting seven rings with three franchises over a 16-season NBA career. Horry began his championship success with the Houston Rockets, winning consecutive titles in 1994 and 1995 alongside Hakeem Olajuwon.

He later joined the Los Angeles Lakers and became a key contributor to their championship three-peat from 2000 through 2002. Playing alongside Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, Horry developed a reputation for delivering important baskets in the playoffs, earning the nickname "Big Shot Rob."

Horry completed his championship collection with the San Antonio Spurs, winning titles in 2005 and 2007. His memorable three-pointer in overtime of Game 5 of the 2005 NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons remains one of the defining shots of his career.

With seven NBA championships, Horry has the most titles of any player who never played for the Boston Celtics.

John Salley — 4 NBA Championships

John Salley became the first player in NBA history to win championships with three different franchises. A versatile defensive forward and center, Salley began his NBA career with the Detroit Pistons and contributed to the franchise's back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990.

Those Detroit teams became known as the "Bad Boys" because of their physical defensive style. Salley played an important role alongside Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman.

After leaving Detroit, Salley joined the Chicago Bulls during the 1995-96 season and won his third championship as Chicago completed its historic 72-win campaign. He later came out of retirement to join the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1999-2000 season.

Los Angeles won the 2000 NBA championship, giving Salley his fourth title and making him the first player to win championships with three different NBA franchises.

LeBron James — 4 NBA Championships

LeBron James joined this exclusive group when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals. His championship career began with Miami, where he won consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013 alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

James returned to Cleveland in 2014 and helped the Cavaliers win their first NBA championship in 2016. Cleveland overcame a 3-1 series deficit against the Golden State Warriors, becoming the first team in NBA Finals history to win a championship after trailing by that margin.

In 2020, James led the Lakers to the championship during the NBA's season restart at Walt Disney World. Los Angeles defeated Miami in six games, giving James his fourth championship and his first with the Lakers.

James also became the first player in NBA history to win the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award with three different franchises, having earned the honor with Miami, Cleveland and Los Angeles.

Danny Green — 3 NBA Championships

Danny Green won championships with the San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers, becoming one of four players in NBA history to accomplish the feat.

Green earned his first NBA championship with San Antonio in 2014, when the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat in five games. His perimeter defense and three-point shooting made him an important contributor to the Spurs' championship team.

After being traded to Toronto in 2018, Green helped the Raptors win their first NBA championship in 2019. Toronto defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games, with Green providing veteran experience and outside shooting.

Green joined the Lakers for the 2019-20 season and won another championship in 2020. He and LeBron James both joined the three-franchise championship club when Los Angeles defeated Miami in the NBA Finals.

Green is the only player on this list to win exactly one NBA championship with each of his three championship franchises.

Why Winning Championships With Three Teams Is Rare

Winning an NBA championship requires talent, health, favorable matchups and the ability to perform throughout a demanding postseason. For most players, reaching the NBA Finals even once is a major career achievement.

Players who win championships with multiple teams must also adapt to different coaching systems, teammates and organizational cultures. They may move from one contender to another through trades, free agency or other roster changes.

Robert Horry and John Salley won championships while contributing to several established championship cores. Danny Green became a valuable role player for three championship organizations, while LeBron James served as the central star for each of his championship franchises.

One interesting connection is that all four players won at least one championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. Two shared the 2000 Lakers championship team, and the other two shared the 2020 Lakers championship team.

The achievement highlights how rare it is for a player to become part of championship-winning organizations in three different cities during an NBA career.
