Derrick Coleman Records a 5x5 — January 15, 1993

Derrick Coleman recorded 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocked shots as the New Jersey Nets defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 110-105 in overtime.

Coleman's Rare 5x5

On January 15, 1993, Derrick Coleman produced one of the most complete statistical performances of his career as the New Jersey Nets defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 110-105 in overtime.

Coleman played 45 minutes and finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocked shots. That gave him at least five in each of the five major statistical categories — points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks — qualifying the performance as a 5x5.

Coleman shot only 5-of-15 from the field, but he repeatedly earned trips to the free-throw line and converted 11 of 12 attempts. His impact extended far beyond scoring, as he contributed directly in virtually every statistical category.

The Nets needed all of that production. Philadelphia and New Jersey finished regulation tied 97-97 before the Nets outscored the 76ers 13-8 during the five-minute overtime period to earn the 110-105 victory.

A Stat-Filled Overtime Game

Coleman's 5x5 was the headline performance, but this game produced several other unusual individual stat lines. New Jersey finished with 17 steals and 10 blocked shots as a team.

Drazen Petrovic scored 19 points and recorded 6 steals, while Kenny Anderson added 21 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. Sam Bowie controlled the glass with 18 rebounds, including 7 offensive rebounds, and also blocked 2 shots.

Philadelphia received an outstanding offensive performance from Hersey Hawkins. He scored a game-high 35 points while shooting 13-of-16 from the field. Hawkins also made three three-pointers and collected 6 rebounds.

Tim Perry added 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks for the 76ers, while Jeff Hornacek finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

How New Jersey Won

The game remained close throughout the night. New Jersey led 26-23 after the first quarter and 47-46 at halftime, but Philadelphia moved ahead 73-68 entering the fourth.

The Nets responded with 29 fourth-quarter points. Philadelphia scored 24, leaving the teams tied at 97 when regulation ended.

New Jersey finally took control during overtime, outscoring Philadelphia 13-8 in the extra period to secure the 110-105 victory.

Coleman's all-around production was especially valuable in a game that required 53 minutes. His 45 minutes were the most played by any New Jersey player, and he contributed at least five points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks while committing only two turnovers.

What Is a 5x5?

A 5x5 occurs when a player records at least five in each of five major statistical categories — points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots — during the same game.

Coleman's line comfortably reached every threshold: 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks. Because steals and blocked shots both require significant defensive activity while assists measure playmaking, the combination is particularly difficult to achieve.
