Draymond Green Records a 5x5 — December 11, 2015

Draymond Green recorded 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocked shots as the Golden State Warriors survived the Boston Celtics 124-119 in double overtime and improved their undefeated start to 24-0.

Green's Double-Overtime 5x5

On December 11, 2015, Draymond Green delivered one of the most complete performances of his career during an exhausting double-overtime battle between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics.

Green played 49 minutes and 38 seconds and finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocked shots. By recording at least five in each of the five major statistical categories — points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks — Green completed a rare NBA 5x5.

He shot 8-of-20 from the field, made two three-pointers and converted 6 of 9 free throws. He also committed only two turnovers despite playing nearly 50 minutes and handling a significant portion of Golden State's playmaking duties.

Green's performance came in one of the most dramatic games of Golden State's historic 2015-16 regular season. Boston pushed the defending champions through two overtime periods before the Warriors escaped TD Garden with a 124-119 victory.

Two Overtimes in Boston

Golden State entered the night unbeaten, but Boston came as close as any team had to ending the Warriors' historic start. The Celtics stayed within striking distance throughout the game and erased a fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime.

The teams were tied 103-103 after regulation. Neither side could separate itself during the first overtime, with both teams scoring seven points to send the game into a second extra period tied 110-110.

Golden State finally gained control in the second overtime. The Warriors scored 14 points in the final five-minute period while holding Boston to nine, allowing them to escape with the 124-119 victory.

Because the game lasted 58 minutes, each team's player minutes totaled 290 rather than the 240 seen in a regulation game. Green played 49:38, while Jae Crowder led Boston with 47:47.

Green Did Everything

Green's 5x5 was not the result of simply reaching the minimum in every category. He comfortably exceeded the threshold in points, rebounds and assists while recording exactly five steals and five blocked shots.

His final line of 24 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists left him only two assists short of a triple-double. At the same time, his 10 combined steals and blocks demonstrated the defensive versatility that had already made him one of the most important players on Golden State's championship roster.

Green also finished with a +14 plus-minus. Only Stephen Curry finished with a better figure for Golden State at +15.

Curry Nearly Had a Triple-Double

Green was not the only Warrior to fill the box score. Stephen Curry scored a game-high 38 points while adding 11 rebounds and 8 assists, leaving him two assists short of a triple-double as well.

Curry struggled from inside the arc but made 6 three-pointers and was perfect on all 14 of his free-throw attempts. He played 46:55 despite committing eight turnovers.

Andre Iguodala added 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, while Festus Ezeli contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Golden State finished with an enormous 67 rebounds as a team.

Boston Pushes the Warriors to the Limit

Boston received its biggest scoring performance from Kelly Olynyk, who came off the bench to score 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting. He also made three three-pointers and recorded 3 steals.

Avery Bradley scored 19 points, Isaiah Thomas finished with 18 points and 10 assists, and Jae Crowder added 15 points. Evan Turner contributed 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists off the bench.

The Celtics actually made seven more field goals than Golden State, but the Warriors created a huge advantage at the free-throw line. Golden State made 31 free throws compared with only nine for Boston.

A Historic Warriors Start

The victory carried significance beyond Green's individual performance. Golden State entered Boston having won its first 23 games of the 2015-16 season and extended the streak to 24-0 with the double-overtime victory.

The Warriors were playing without Klay Thompson, who was sidelined by a sprained right ankle, while Harrison Barnes was also unavailable. Boston was missing Marcus Smart. Despite those absences, the teams produced one of the most memorable games of the early 2015-16 season.

Golden State's undefeated run would finally end the following night in Milwaukee, but the victory in Boston ensured the Warriors reached 24-0 before suffering their first loss. They eventually finished the regular season 73-9.

What Is a 5x5?

A 5x5 occurs when a player records at least five in each of five major statistical categories during the same game: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots.

Green's line easily qualified: 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks. The difficulty of accumulating both steals and blocked shots while also contributing as a scorer, rebounder and playmaker makes the 5x5 one of basketball's rarest all-around statistical achievements.
