About NBA Awards
The NBA recognizes players, coaches and executives with a variety of annual
awards. The league's oldest major individual award is the Rookie of the Year,
which dates to the 1952-53 season, while the Most Valuable Player award was
first presented following the 1955-56 season.
The NBA later added awards recognizing defense, coaching, improvement,
bench play, sportsmanship, community service and front-office achievement.
Many awards are now named in honor of important figures from NBA history.
