Olajuwon's 33-Point 5x5
A 5x5 requires at least five points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and five blocked shots in one game. Olajuwon reached all five categories with 33 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks.
His scoring made this performance especially impressive. Olajuwon made 11 of his 17 field-goal attempts and scored 11 more points at the free-throw line.
He was also responsible for five of Houston's eight steals and five of the Rockets' seven blocked shots.
An Overtime Battle
This was much more than an unusual individual stat line. Houston needed overtime to escape with a 112-110 victory over Minnesota.
Olajuwon played 51 of the game's 53 minutes, the most of any Rockets player. His 33 points led Houston, while Matt Bullard provided a huge 28-point performance that included five three-pointers.
Doug West led Minnesota with 29 points. Rookie Christian Laettner scored 23 points and added six rebounds, five steals and a block, while Chuck Person finished with 22 points.
Minnesota forced Houston into 21 turnovers and recorded 14 steals, but the Rockets overcame those mistakes with efficient shooting and a strong performance at the free-throw line.
Part of Houston's Late-Season Surge
The victory improved Houston to 55-25 and extended the Rockets' winning streak to 10 games.
The streak had carried Houston from 45-25 to 55-25 late in the 1992-93 regular season. The Rockets had beaten Milwaukee, Golden State, the Clippers, Utah, San Antonio, the Lakers twice, Denver, Seattle and Phoenix before defeating Minnesota.
Houston ultimately finished the regular season 55-27, winning the Midwest Division and earning the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
Olajuwon's 1992-93 Season
The Minnesota game came near the end of one of the finest seasons of Olajuwon's career. His ability to contribute in every major statistical category made him one of the league's most complete players.
During the closing weeks of the season, Olajuwon repeatedly produced huge all-around games. Just three days before this 5x5, he recorded 30 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in Houston's victory at Phoenix.
Three days after the Minnesota game, he finished the regular season with 38 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, three steals and seven blocks in an overtime loss at San Antonio.
